I am starting a classic video game & system collection. It's really fun and growing fast. My turbo grafx 16 rules, but there are many games I want to play but simply CANNOT find in real-life card form for the actual console. I am planning on buying the cdrom addon for the tg16.

Would it be possible to burn a NORMAL rom to a CD and play it in the tg16 cdrom drive?

For example, I am trying to find Splatterhouse in card format. I suppose if I looked hard enough I could find it somewhere, but to tide me over until then would it be possible to burn a downloaded rom to a CD and play it in the tg16 cd rom drive, even though this game was never intended to run from the cd?

One word : impossible. The only way is to write an emulator to play the roms on an actual TG16. But, being an 8bit machine clocked at 7.16 MHz, emulation speed would be, well.....

Sucky, but it makes sense.

Have you ever seen those flash memory cards for GameBoy and GBA? The hand-held is convinced that the hardware is a normal game cartridge, but it is actually a flash-memory kinda card that you can hook up to your PC via usb or whatever, and you can copy like up to 5 roms on there at a time.

Now, if something like this existed for the turbo grafx 16, you probably would have mentioned it, but I'll ask just in case Smile

Is there such a thing for the tg16?

Have a look at the ROMulator, from our French pal Aramis:

http://pceteikoku.consolemul.com/index.php?page=romu

Not exactly a flash-mem card, but the purpose is quite the same. Don't ask him for any plan though, it's definitely not a finished product nor in any state of replication for the time being.

Another guy called Jerry DaSilva had a similar project a couple of years ago; it was called the TurboRAM and seemed to be quite advanced, but the page hasn't been updated for a long time.

Ok to do this you'll need three isos and the second track iso from the
american Gate of Thunder 4in1 pack. This track conatains the menu for
selecting the game and Bomberman. Thus every game you make this way
will have Bomberman on it. Here's a diagram of what you should have before
you burn the game.

You MUST burn these with VOB's Instant CD Wizard

To add an audio track right click the virtual disc and select new track
then insert it as a wav audio file.

To insert the data simply do the same and select track from a physical
image and insert the iso.

track 1: audio.wav
track 2: bomberman_menu_from_got.iso
track 3: audio.wav
track 4: parodius.iso
track 5: audio.wav
track 6: imagefight2.iso
track 7: audio.wav
track 8: audio.wav
track 9: audio.wav
track10: audio.wav
track11: audio.wav
track12: audio.wav
track13: audio.wav
track14: audio.wav
track15: audio.wav
track16: audio.wav
track17: audio.wav
track18: audio.wav
track19: audio.wav
track20: audio.wav
track21: audio.wav
track22: download2.iso

Now burn the disc Track at once (default) and you'll have a disc
that will work in your duo.

Note that the menu will still say Gate of thunder Bonk or Bonk's
revenge but it will load the game that corresponds to the track
number of the now non existent GOT or bonk game.

You can access the Bomberman game by pressing up right down left
then button II at the menu screen.

YOU CANNOT REMOVE BOMBERMAN!!

What do I put in the wave files? Anything I want, just to hold the space? Or do I need the wavs from the original image?

Let me see if I understand this correctly:

The idea is that there exists a demo or compilation cd out there that "hosts" 4 games, where at least one of which is a normal rom. By ripping out one of these games and depositing my own hucard rom, I can make any (my inserted) game selectable from the menu, thus burning a "regular rom" to a cd. It's a little dirty (I imagine the menu would still have the original game name, but who cares, right?) but it works.

Sounds feasible.

So, I need to find the 4-in-1 Gate of Thunder ROM, which is a CD rom. I should be able to use a cd burning program to break up the rom into tracks, and I swap one of the tracks with one of my hucard roms. Do I need to "prep" my rom in any way for it to be a valid track?

Also, regarding the audio wavs -- can I insert empty wav files or should I just use the ones from the original 4-in-1 rom?

Thanks in advance for the explanation Wink

You can reach me at chris@abichandani.com if we end up going off-topic or anything.

"neo nectaris" is another CD game that has a HU CARD ROM on it (the original Nectaris, which was a HuCard).... (just as the gate of thunder cd Kaminari discussed has bonk and bomberman games which were originally HuCards).

i guess you could do the same thing Kaminari described with the neo nectaris CD...

Ok, I gave that a try, but I could not get it to work with Instant CD, so I used Nero 5.5.10. Couldn't burn "track at once", only "disk at once" and it did not work. Now I just took a Rom and renamed them ISO for the last 3 data tracks. Any advice?

Wow.. this sounds like a great idea. Has anybody gotten this to work yet? (I only have a TG16 at the moment, I'm trying hard to find a Duo)..

I think this would be an excellent way to enjoy fan-translations or other "hacks" on a real machine, which is always the best way to enjoy the games!!

Nope, still haven't got this to work, nor do I believe anyone has otherwise they probably would have posted about it. What I can' t figure out is what do i have to do to the roms to make them iso's, just rename them?

You mean turning a ROM into an ISO?

That's not as easy as it seems. Charles McDonald has made a very handy tool called PCE2CD, but it only works with very small programs (up to 8 KB). Look at the included readme.txt or ask Charles here for more details :P

I've been wondering if this could be done for some time. I would love to be able to play more games on my DUO. If anyone really gets this to work, please let eveyone know.
