I'm currently having Trouble with the CD Audio in Magic Engine. I checked all 3 of my PC Engine CD/Turbo Duo CD games and all 3 of them produce no CD music, but the in-game PCM sound effects I can hear just fine.

I deleted the the configuration files and basicly started using the emu from scratch and this still has'nt fixed the problem. and It only effects Magic Engine also, as I can listen to music CDs in Winamp or Windows Media player. Only Magic Engine is preventing me from listening to the CD Audio in my games.

I'll also mention that the music worked fine before and I had no trouble until recently.

This is my PC specification, perhaps this would help.

Pentium III 933Mhz, 512 MB Sdram at 133Mhz System Bus.
Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 400, SB Live! Soundcard.
Maxtor HDD 7200 RPM, 16x DVD, 12x8x32 CD-RW. Windows XP.

Also the games I played and the only games I have which are causing the issues are Dracula X : Chi No Rondo, Ys Books 1 & 2, and Bonk's Adventure CD.

My operating system was originally Win ME, but it had so many issues I upgraded to XP, which surprisingly works much better as I've never gotten a crash of any kind.

Now I mentioned in my previous post that I could hear sound before. This was about a week ago, and I did'nt make any serious changes to my PC either. so what I don't understand is. If CD Audio worked in my games before, why dos'nt it now.

While the link you provided did help to a extent, as the only solution seems to wait until Magic Engine v1.00.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but the fact that CD Audio worked in my games before and with Windows XP I might add, the solution you provided dos'nt really help with the here and now.

Please post the [sound init] and [boot cd] section of your log.txt file after playing a cd game. Maybe we can find a problem there.

Did you install any CD-burning software or ASPI layers recently?

If you plug in headphones directly into your CD-Rom drive, does CDDA sound play through this headphone jack while you are playing a game in Magic Engine?

Well I recently deleted everything from my magic engine Emulator and started fresh.

I'll show you the Sound logs, so you can probably figure out the problem.
I had CD sound before with Win XP about a week ago but not now.

Eveything looks fine from your log file.

Your sound card and cd drive are detected properly and a cd input line is being selected:
Quote:
-COMPACTDISC [ 8] vol = 100 [00000000/0000FFFF] (selected as CD input line)

The volume is set to full, so that should also be fine.

Additionally, Magic Engine is attempting to play the cd audio:
Quote:
play audio 14189...22166
pause audio... OK

In order to troubleshoot, let's trace the cd audio on its path from the cd drive to your speakers.
Here is what I would recommend:
First, verify that your cd drive is in fact correctly playing cd audio by plugging in a pair of headphones to the headphone jack on the front of your cd drive. Turn down your main speakers, start Magic Engine and play a game. You should hear cd audio (e.g. background music) coming out of the headphones. If your hear the cd audio, that means that Magic Engine is asking the drive to play cd audio and the drive is doing so successfully.

Second, verify that the cd audio is being properly transferred from the cd drive to your sound card. As you probably know, many windows programs use digital audio extraction to play cd audio, however magic engine does not support this; rather, it requires a physical audio cable connection running from the cd drive to your sound card. This is usually a thin grey cable plugged into connectors labelled either "cd audio" for an analog connection or "cd digital" and "spdif" for a digital connection. If you say that cd audio worked before, then maybe this cable somehow got disconnected. You can look inside your case to verify the connection. Also, make sure that the cd drive that you are using to try to play the Turboduo games is the one that makes this connection.

If all else fails, you can make an iso image of your turbo duo games using CloneCD or Alcohol 120% and then play them with a cd emulator such as daemon tools, Clonedrive, or Alcohol 120% (Just change the drive letter in pce.ini). This should play cd audio without the need for any physical cable connections. Also you can try to play the games using your other cd drives.

Good luck

since I have no Headphones. I used my Speakers as makeshift headphones. Yes I hear sound coming from the DVD-rom drive.

Also I like to mention this as I said it before but I'll stess it this time.

I heard CD Audio before like a week ago also with Win XP. I made no major changes to my computer.

What I don't understand is, if I could here CD audio before why can't I now

I admit, this is very puzzling.
The only scenarios that I can think of are the following:
1.) The cd-audio cable connection between your drive and soundcard somehow came loose or the cable got shorted out. This is highly unlikely, but possible. Make sure this cable is plugged into the header labelled cd-audio on your sound card. You can open up your case and verify the connection. Also you can try to play an audio cd in windows media player or winamp after disabling "Digital CD Playback" in the device manager. Also, you can try to use a cd image with cd emulation software. Additionally, you play with the cd_audio_input_line setting in pce.ini; try forcing it to 0 or 1.
Quote:

; CD-ROM audio input line
; --
; 0 -> first audio input line
; 1 -> second audio input line
; ...
;
; (see the log.txt file to find out what are the line numbers)
;

cd_audio_input_line=

;
; master audio volume
; --
; 0-100
;

master_audio_volume=65

;
; fx audio volume
; --
; 0-100
;

fx_audio_volume=100

;
; cd audio volume
; --
; 0-100
;

cd_audio_volume=70

2.) Maybe some program muted the "cd audio" volume level in surround mixer. This does not appear to be the case from your log file but it has happened to me before. You can try to force the cd_audio_volume level to 100 in pce.ini.

3.) If you installed any cd burning software recently, it may have installed some aspi layers that can cause problems. In the past, I've had some problems with Magic Engine after installing Blindwrite.

I'm sorry that I cannot provide any more help. At this point, I would really recommend for you to try to create a cd image of a game and use Alchol 120% or Daemon tools to play it. This should have the best chance for success. If this does not work, then there is a deeper problem.

I am having the EXACT same problem... It worked before I had Windows XP and now it doesn't.. no audio beyond simple efx sounds. Has there been any word or update I'm not aware of since this original posting back in October? I'd love to use this emulator since I paid for it -- very frustrating that there's no music to my games. Let me know!!

Thanks everyone -
JD

The reason why you heard CD Audio just fine with Windows XP is because ever since Windows Media Player 8/9 came out, you could listen to redbook audio with no need of your cdrom being hooked up to your sound card via a analog or digital cable - WMP simply streams the redbook audio on-the-fly. This is hardcoded into the API of Windows XP, so downloading WMP for Windows 9x or ME will NOT work.

To get redbook audio to work in Windows 9x/ME, you must know which CDROM drive is hooked up to your sound card. To do this, you must open up your computer, and find the analog/digital cable which is hooked to the top of your sound card - once you find it, simply follow the cable to see which CDROM drive it is hooked up to. Once you know which CDROM contains the cable, edit your pce.ini file to point to the CDROM drive on bootup. This will fix your problems.

There are probably tons of posts (***142 topics to be exact***) relating to cd audio problems in here, ALL with the same problem, ALL with the same fix. Im just waiting for the big 1.0 to fix all of that.

Then David will erase all of these evil entries... Oh ya.

In the meantime,

Ho ho ho!
