Had a quick search but couldn't find an answer to this, but appologies if it's a known issue.

In short, Win XP can't locate any of the audio on PC CD games. It can find the data, as magic engine will play CD games fine (albeit with no CD audio). When I browse the CD in Windows it only finds one audio track, which I assume is actually the data track.

Pretty standard PC set-up, Win XP SP2, DVD-RW drive, Audigy 2 sound (with no mixer cable attached) etc.

What do I need to tell Windows to recognise PC Engine audio tracks?

Thanks in advance!

It has to do with the TOC (Table Of Contents) of the disc when it was pressed. This can cause some of the audio tracks to be hidden. Also, PC-Engine games use a strange Mixed Mode format that has both audio and data tracks. That's probably why the audio tracks aren't showing up in Windows Explorer. Which games have you tried?

Just a couple so far - Chi no Rondo, and Super Raiden.

Is there any way to get Windows to see the audio tracks?

Nope. But you can usually read them with any good ripper: CDex (with some limitations), Nero Express...

Your post is not very clear, though. Do you have problems playing the audio tracks in ME as well?

I can't play the audio tracks at all. iTunes can't find them, not can Windows Explorer or Windows Media Player. It's like they don't exist!

That's normal you can't see all the tracks with Windows.
Use Foobar2000 if you want to play ccda tracks:

Square, can Foobar play the PCE CDs as well? Most of the time, players/rippers like CDex or VUPlayer have problems reading the TOC of illegal mixed mode CDs like the PCE or PC-88 ones.

I think RealPlayer can also play them all right. And it will even show you the names of the tracks on Y's 1 and 2 if you let it access the web to retrieve the data. God, did Nec love us back then or what?

Can you see your disc spinning when an audio track is supposed to be played during the game?

Check in your Sound and Multimedia properties that your CD Audio input is not muted.

No, it just can't find the audio tracks at all. Tries, then fails and stops spinning.

It has no trouble with the data track though.

Try to play any CD Audio instead of a game in Magic Engine; then post your log file and your settings.
