A good place to get acquainted with this excellent sound format:

Technical docs and tools for HES:

- Mamiya http://nezplug.sf.net/
- Charles McDonald http://cgfm2.emuviews.com/turbo.htm

Ah ha! It just so happens that I'm listening to Dungeon Explorer HES rips in Winamp as I read your post!

It's really cool to use NEZPlug in tandem with AWEamp, provided you have an AWE card. This lets you alter the EQ, apply filters, alter the pitch, add low-frequency oscillation to volume, pitch, or filter, add chorus and reverb effects, and more! A great way to create loops for your music programs.

If only NEZPlug would let you mute individual channels, like MagicEngine does. Is this program still in development?

NEZplug is still alive and kicking (was updated two weeks ago), though it's primarily a NSF plug-in and the HES core needs some work - its current sound rendering is similar to Magic Engine without interpolation.

Mamiya (NEZplug coder and HES creator) will gladly accept any reasonable suggestion, provided that it's written in clear English (or better, in Japanese Wink ).

While my website is still in construction (will it ever become real? and where's Mulder anyway?), I decided to make its HES section available to the public.

It's the largest collection of HES music files on the Net. It's definitely larger and cleaner than Zophar's archives. I'm adding M3U playlists on a regular basis. You will need NEZplug for Winamp if you want to use my custom playlists (you should!).

You'll also find an Emulation section providing some useful resources, especially a complete Previews archive for Magic Engine. Be warned: this archive is NOT based on GoodPCE or any other renaming tool. It's based on my own datafile I created for RomCenter.

You can consider this datafile a 'perfect' PCE collection. No bad dump, no dupe, no pirate (except for the hacks that offer something genuine like trainers, sprite modifications, etc). And most of all: the filenames are as correct as possible. They stick to the original names. Jûô Ki is the Japanese name for Altered Beast. Saigo no Nindô is the Japanese name for Ninja Spirit. And so on.

Have fun!
