After purchasing and installing an Arcade Vga from Ultimarc, I'm enjoying playing Super Famicom and MAME games in their originally intended resolutions, at 15khz non-interlaced mode (on an RGB monitor). It is absoltuely stunning, and really captures the experience that the original hardware does. Is there any plans to add support for this to Magice Engine? Perhaps maybe a "custom mode" where the user can set the resolution would be nice - assuming the graphics card supports it. This card is becomming more and more popular. Mainly for MAME cabs, but why stop there, right?

Old ME 0.99 supports custom resolutions. The feature will be back in the next versions of ME and MEFX. Btw, in order to enjoy custom resolutions on a CRT monitor, you have to create them first with PowerStrip. Windows doesn't provide any "non-native" resolution, but you're certainly aware of this.

Actually, I'm not really aware of it. I just got the AVGA and have only been playing emulators that support 15khz modes. I do look forward to the next releases though. Smile

Ah yes, I forgot that modern video drivers usually provide some 15 KHz TV resolutions (720x480 in NTSC, 720x576 in PAL). You might be able to use them in Magic Engine with the next release, without having to create specific resolutions with PowerStrip and the like.

I'm actually looking for native PC-Engine resolutions, in non-interlaced modes. The PAl & NTSC TV solutions would be interlaced. When is the next release due out?

Not too long after MEFX, which should be available soon. Both emulators share many common features, including the custom resolutions.

One thing I thought I would mention on this (two actually).

First, a question. Will the "future" version of ME be released with MEFX? Seems the main download has not been updated for over a year.

Second, a user at my forums posted this:
Quote:
In regards to ME: The same problem will be there when the author adds customizable resolutions - it's hard to realize that the A-VGA uses 256 x 240 (instead 224) but needs to display only the original system's 224 lines.

ZSNES now supports custom resolutions, but wants to stretch the SFC's 224 lines into 240 lines (the latter that the A-VGA uses). The ideal would be put 8 blank lines on top, and 8 blank lines on bottom, vertically centering the picture. For some weird reason, adding 25% scanlines does this for ZSNES. I'm pretty sure it's a bug, but is being used as a feature. I've actually not tried it yet.

Thanks
GP

Actually, you don't need PowerStrip if you have an nVidia card at least (don't know about ATI). The ForceWare drivers have had a section to add custom resolutions for some time now. ...just FYI.

Hello,
I see in MagicEngineV0.9.9 beta 5 that PCE.ini file have 3 video modes:
Mode 1 : 256x224
Mode 2 : 320x224
Mode 3 : 352x224

So it can easily fit to the arcadeVGA one without problems:
256x224 -> 256x240(arcadeVGA)
320x224 -> 320x240(arcadeVGA & a standard resolution no ?)
352x224 -> 368x240(arcadeVGA)
with black borders and no stretch it should looks great on arcade monitor or TV. (close of the real hardware).

here a complete list of TheArcadeVGA card built-in resolutions:

Code:

H    V    Horizontal Refresh (Arcade Monitor)    Vertical Refresh (Arcade Monitor)    Horizontal Refresh (VGA Monitor)    Vertical Refresh (VGA Monitor)
240    240    15Khz    60Hz    31Khz    60Hz

800    600    15Khz    50Hz    31Khz    60Hz
  Higher Resolutions      Not Available. "Dummy" resolutions are used. Right-Click and "Properties" to change back to a lower resolution if accidentally selected.      Various. Requires Multi-Frequency Monitor or PC Monitor
These are in addition to all the normal VGA text/graphics modes.

In MagicEngineV0.9.9 beta 5, we can set the 3 resolutions mode. but in the last build (1.0.0 PRE10) only 640x480 in fullscreen is available Sad

As in MEFX 1.0, the next version of ME 1.0 will allow you to choose whatever screenmode you want (providing that it's already available in your system). It's just a matter of patience.

Thanks, Kaminari.

Any idea when this might be out? It has been quite some time since I posted this initially. I've just gotten my AVGA back up on an RGB TV. Mame and ZSNES look fantastic... want to add Magic Engine as well.

Probably should grab MEFX as well.

I guess perhaps I could look around for a v0.9.9 beta 5 in the meantime.
