Well, I did get ME99 beta 5, but had no luck changing the resolutions. I changed them in the PCE.ini file, but I do not see where I can select them in the menu. I'm not familiar w/ older versions, so perhaps there was no video menu there.

I tried the same w/ MEFX, but do not see where you set the resolution outside the GUI. It has some other than 640x480, but again, I'm looking for 256x224 non-interlaced. The desktop won't run at this resolution, so "Desktop" doesn't help.

In ME 0.99, you need to edit your INI file and change the values of res_256, res_320 and res_352 to something like this:

Code:
res_256=512,448
res_320=672,448
res_352=672,448

But for your screen modes to be effective in ME (0.99 or 1.0) you have to create them beforehand with a tweaking tool like PowerStrip. 256x224 or 512x448 are not native Windows resolutions, hence you have to create them from scratch. I'm told the ForceWare drivers allow you to easily add custom screen modes to the list of modes recognized by the system, but I never tried this feature. You'll have to experiment. PowerStrip can be quite daunting if you're not familiar with screen tweaking.

Hi

Can you explain the code. Wouldn't it be something like
Code:

res_256=256x224
res_320=320x224

The card actually supports 256x240. ZSnes will actually paint 8 lines on top & bottom, making a somewhat letterboxed image. Very liveable though. I'm not sure how Magic Engine will react.

But what if they are native to my card? Zsnes, Mame, Gens, etc. all display 256x240 w/o the need of powerstrip.

EDIT: I just ran powerstrip. It basically tells me that I already ahve 256x240 mode on the card, and doesn't let me add it.

Can you confirm that ME99 beta5 has no way of changing the screen resolution via menus? The Config menu only has controller options it seems.

Nope, it's a comma, not a x.

Strictly speaking, this resolution is provided by your driver, not your card. From a Windows point of view, it's a native screen mode and thus you can use it as any other Windows resolution. No need for PowerStrip.

However I'm not sure which minimum resolution Magic Engine supports. You'll have to try it with the option res_256=256,240. Make sure the zoom option is set to 1x (size=0).

Thanks, that helps. I've made some progress, but it's still not working.
Basically, the Magic Engine menu will always run in whatever resolution the desktop is running in. I take it this is by design? It tries to go into whatever mode when I start a game, but it looks like the refresh rates are off. I can see logos and whatnot, but the screen is all distorted.

This could be an issue.

Okay, I got it to work in v.99b5. For some reason, having Powerstrip on actually broke it. By turning it off, and making the changes in the pce.ini that Kaminara suggested, I'm able to play the games in 256x240, w/ a very lovely 8 black lines on the top or bottom (letterbox effect--- about the best you can ask for w/ this card).

So now that the OS-X version of ME is out, can we hopefully see the resolution problem resolved once and for all?

Did anything ever come of this? I see a MAC update a couple of months back, but no PC update since 2005.

According to the November news, the next Windows build of ME should be available some time around May/June.

I will perhaps release a last PR before the big update. I have one that is almost ready and since the current version of ME lacks so many features that are already present in ME-FX an intermediate release could be nice.

About the resolution update, it's already in ME-FX and it will be in this new PR. Smile

Mainly a better emulation, but there are a few other things I want to add too, and yes a cheat engine is one of them. Wink
