I've seen various other games discussed with this problem, but I'll be damned if I can get this to work...

Just burned Y's Book I and II to a CD... I put the SYSCARD3.PCE in my ME directory, I disabled digital playback on my CD drive, and I get nothing. There's no sound at all during the intial title screen, and when that passes I get maybe three seconds of the intro screen and nothing again, even if I plug my headphones into the CD... not too sure what you guys need to help, but let me know what I can post to help out or tell me what I need to do to get this working.

Thanks!

The opening title sequence after the main title screen will give me about three seconds of sound before blacking out, and I'll get about the same during the intro sequence. If I plug headphones into the jack on my CD ROM I still get nothing.

I use Magic Engine v.98... here's the log file that generates after running the CD...

I burned the game normally, and CloneCd v4.0.1.10 gave me no errors or any indication anything burned incorrectly. I used the normal method... just selected "write from image", selected the ccd sheet, selected "make a data cd" and away she went. After combining the files I got three files:

y's.ccd (10kb file)
y's.img (749,404kb file)
y's.sub (30,588kb file)

The person who posted the game said I should use the "make a game dics" option in CloneCD, but I get the same results. I'm at a loss. Anyone help me out? And if I was able to obtain the actual CD of the game as opposed to an image, would I have the same problems?

The most obvious thing would be to try listening to your game in a CD player. Just be careful to skip the second track (some players don't like data tracks at all). If you don't hear any sound, you know what it means.

Another thing that comes to mind: can you listen to regular audio CDs in analog mode? And I really mean analog, not digital. Even when you disable digital mode in your Device Manager, some players / rippers are still able to force your drive into digital. If you're using Winamp 3, disable 'CD audio extraction' in the CD audio settings, relaunch Winamp and see what it does (on speakers and headphones).

Third point: forget ME 0.98 and upgrade to 0.99b5.

Finally I would recommend that you modify your INI this way:

;
; CD-ROM audio input line
; --
; 0 -> first audio input line [default]
; 1 -> second audio input line
; ...
;

cd_audio_input_line=

;
; CD-ROM drive
; --
; 0 -> first CD-ROM drive [default]
; 1 -> second CD-ROM drive
; ...
;

drive=0

And leave your debug log activated Smile

Why oh why do people still download & use a 2 year old version? There is absolutely no point in this...

Because I happened to find the software at a site with an older version of it. I've since gotten the most recent version but have the same problem.
Being new to TG16 emulation, I'm still learning the ropes. So be nice to me. Smile

Admiral John, you didn't answer my questions. We need some feedback if we are to be of any help.

Sorry 'bout that. Embarassed Anyways, I tried to listen to the audio through the front and I can hear the audio for the three or four seconds through the headphones that I can hear through the speakers. I tried making the changes you recommended to my pce.ini file with no difference. I updated my version to the most recent one from here and still have the same problem. I even went so far as to try to emulate the CD Drive with Daemon tools, but that, to be blunt, was a disaster. Froze the whole system.

Maybe I'm an idiot (okay, there's no maybe there) but I can't find an option in Winamp to disable the digital output, and I do use version 3. when I stick the disc I burned in the cd player, it shows one file called "track01" and nothing else.

The game itself works okay.... if I boot using the System Card 3.0 I have the ingame sounds... just no CD audio. I can't see any other tracks other than the first one no matter what I use to look for them... Exporer, Winamp... any of them.

Does this help at all? The person who posted the image in the newsgroup I downloaded it from said the problem is probably in the image itself and not anything on my side, so if I bought the actuall game itself would I have these same problems?

Right after the Ys blue title screen and just before the real intro? A short sound effect with seagulls, right? What you hear is not CD audio but PCM audio (generated by the console).

Go to Options> Preferences> Audio> CD playback. The first option is called 'Enable CD audio extraction'. Uncheck it, restart Winamp, and try to listen to a regular audio CD.

Be sure that you have the latest Winamp 3 version. If the option above isn't available, perhaps you don't have the latest plugins. Get them here: http://blorp.com/~peter/wa3/wa3update.exe

Only one track? That's definitely not good. I would think that the burning process has strongly gone awry (or simply that the ISO you got is a piece of crap).

And just to be sure... When I say 'CD player' I mean a home player, not your comp's one Surprised To my knowledge, it's not possible to read PC Engine audio tracks in any Windows player (the CD is not recognized as a regular audio CD nor an ISO compatible CD). The only way you can listen to these tracks is via a ripper (CDex is a good one).

By the way, did you try any other game? An original game would give a much better indication of what's really going on (whether the problem is related to your copies or your system).

Not necessarily. Ys is a game known to work well under Magic Engine.

OK, another test: boot with the System Card 3, pop any regular audio CD in your drive, push Run. You should be taken to the built-in audio CD interface of the PC Engine. Can you listen to any track? If not, the problem most certainly lies in your system.

I've been re-reading though your post; I had completely forgotten the headphones bit. You hear something through the headphones of your CD drive for a couple of seconds? How strange. That can't be PCM audio... I'm at a loss here.

Indeed. The sound you're hearing Admiral john can't be the loading pcm because no pcm can come out of the headphones jack. The problem you're having is a bad disk : your cd player only sees the first track ( the warning track right? ) & the iso doesn't appear as an audio track. So you got only a warning track & an iso... the rest got skipped by your burner...

This usually happens with iso/mp3 with a bad cue file... Im surprised to see a cue/bin ( or any comparable format ) NOT work... What speed did you use? did your burner give any errors?

This thread is shaping up to be a non-emulator related problem, I think that www.rigg.info should be your destination for obvious reasons Wink ...

Okay, here's what I got...

Putting the CD into my home stereo reveals a bunch of tracks I can play and hear. So I'm good there. Unchecking the box in Winamp still lets me hear CD's, both through the speakers and through the CD-ROM jack. And if I put an audio CD into my CD-ROM I can play it fine through Magic Engine.

Now, some clarification on what I can hear through the headphones... when I first run the CD I see a still picture of "Y's" with the tower in the background and hear nothing. As the copyright info plays, I get a few seconds of the intro theme, then nothing. I'll hear nothing else unti I start the game. Over the text "In the beginning..." I'll hear a few seconds of waves and seagulls through the speakers but NOT the headphones, then as it shows a shot of the boat (looks like it's coming right at you) I'll hear another snippet of CD audio through the headphones and speakers and the nothing. If I start the game the PCE sound comes through the speakers but not the headphones. The game itself is okay... it's just a CD sound issue I can't resolve.

Now when I played this game on my original TG16 system I seem to remember that music played over the first screen... the "Y's Book I and II" with the tower. I hear nothing during that portion. I seem to remember seeing a thread here somewhere about audio sync problems with this game I'll look for, but lacking that, this is where I sit. I don't have any original TG16 CD's to play, but from what I've seen there's something else going on here.

I appreciate the help you've given me so far, and since I just lost my bid on Ebay for the game this is my last chance to get this working. If you have any other thoughts, by all means share. Smile

Cdr issue no doubt. sometimes burning a game at a high speed with a bad quality cd-r produces bad cd's. Try re-burning it at 1x with a good quality cd. If this doesn't work, try getting the game from another source. Like I said, the RIGG group is the place to get CDR related info Wink ...

That's what I wanted to hear.

Obviously Magic Engine works correctly and your system has no problem either. You probable have a bad copy. Indeed the audio tracks may be at fault here. Burning them at high speed or on a bad CD-R can produce what I would call 'unstable' audio tracks. Some players will be able to read them, others will have a very hard time focusing on them and will eventually skip them if they can't keep up with the reading process (like a CD with too many scratches).

As a last resort, try burning your ISO in 1x. If that fails, there's nothing much we can do here. As Jabberwok suggests, you can try your luck on dedicated sites like RIGG.

Tried that, and had the same result. Just for my own amusement I played the game for a bit to see what happened to the audio later, and when I leave the first town to fight, the audio plays again for a bit longer, then again cuts out. Crying or Very sad

I apprecaite all your help, guys. I'll try this other site and see what I can do, and by all means let me know if you have any other ideas. Smile
