I can't hear any background music. The music files are on the CD but it doesn't play it in the game. I have Windows ME, any idea what's wrong?

And the CD is burned properly, I know the problem is with Windows ME but I don't remember what.

Ok. First we will need the usual info from your part if you expect any kind of help :

Your PC's specs ( cpu, video card, sound card, cd-rom, presence of audio cable ect... )
Your OS
Version of Magic Engine
Info about the burned disk ( although this may fall in the www.rigg.info category ) example : where you got it, method/speed of burning & software used.

Info?

Ok. Supposing the CD is in good shape, can you hear any normal audio cd's from your cd-rom?

Are you using an image of a real system card ( something in the likes of SYSCARD3.PCE ) or magic system ( 3.00 )?

I want you to do another thing : delete your log.txt file in your Magic Engine folder, run Dracula X once, exit, copy & paste your new log.txt file here.

Also, the background music seems to work for me in Magic Engine 0.91 (DOS). But not in the later versions...

So that basicaly means that your CD may be bad ( PCE games tend to need those pregap & postgap ). Sometimes even a few seconds is enough to make a bad disc. Try getting it from another source.

I've tried both the magic system 3 and syscard 3 in Magic Engine 0.99

Neither make the sound work.

If my CD is bad (which I don't think it is) thenwhy would I be able to hear the music in Magic Engine 0.91 and not 0.99 beta 5?

TIP : always use syscard3.

CD's originating from badly made iso/mp3's always gives problems, that's a fact. like I said, and I quote

this may be a bad disc. I also happen to know that some bad discs can work in the old DOS Magic Engine, wich is perfectly normal. After all, did you think that microsoft would have upgraded from mscdex to directplay if it was the exact same thing? Remember that PCE games are a little touchchy about pregap's & postgap's. But you knew that didn't you?

Anyway, get inside system properties, device manager,cd-roms, properties & check if digital cd playback is enabled. If so, uncheck it & reboot. ALso make sure that you didn't put a drive letter in the pce.ini file. Remember that we are here to help with Magic Engine problems, not with windows problems. You know how windows works & can diagnose it by yourself right? For windows related problems I recommend www.computing.net

Perhaps because 0.91 used good old MSCDEX under DOS (if I'm not mistaken) and 0.96+ do rely on ASPI/SPTI under Windows... Did you install any ASPI driver on your system?
