Where exactly do they come from? Are these essentially hacked regular syscards to allow better compatability? Are they Japanese system cards?

No. David can explain this better than me, but the magic system is emulated system cards rather than dumped ones. Since they are emulated the compatibility is lower than real system cards but David is working on them so they will eventually be worthwhile. For now though, stick to regular dumped system cards.
