I cant get CD audio to work with my new computer.
I tried using both my CDRW drive and the DVD drive.
Both ran the games but I couldnt get any audio from the CDs.
I tried setting the input line to what it was listed as in the log.txt also but that didnt make any difference.
Any ideas?

If it's a newer computer, you probably don't have CD audio cables in your system. My computer doesn't either (it's an HP Pavilion).
If it does have CD audio cables, the drives are probably set up for digital playback. Magic Engine doesn't support digital audio playback. Here's how to switch it:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel. Click Sounds and Audio Devices.
Click the Hardware tab.
Select the drive you want to use for Magic Engine, and click Properties. A new window will open. Select the Properties tab.
Uncheck the box that says "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device". Click OK. Click OK.
Run Magic Engine and see if you get sound. If you don't you probably need a CD audio cable. They can be bought from any computer store and should be well under $10USD. |

I still cant get any audio from the CD rom.
I dont know what to do.
I have regular CDs working now through the analog cable but still no CD music in ME. I tried selecting every line source in the log file and nada.
I should be playing some awesome PC games and instead I'm tinkering with this emulator. If I didnt love the Turbo so much I'd think I was going crazy.
=P
Anyway, if you or anyone has any ideas I'm all ears.

Try clearing the line as this:
cd_audio_input_line=
(Magic Engine chooses automagically the best input device.)
If that doesn't work, please post your log here and specify your OS. |

> checking sound card mixer ("VIA AC'97 Audio (WAVE)" v5.10)
I remember some people with a similar problem had the same embedded audio chipset on their mobo. I wonder if that could be the culprit...
> master audio volume... 100 (3)
> fx audio volume... 75 (100)
> cd audio volume... 100 ( 98 )
There could be a problem here. Your master audio volume is nearly quiet. The first value indicates the Magic Engine setting (the one in your INI file), which is OK; the second one in brackets indicates the real setting of your sound card. You should have a look at your audio mixer panel and see if the sound volume of your system is correctly set.

Your first drive is a CD-RW, right? Chances are your DVD-ROM is plugged to your sound card / chipset, but the CD-RW is not. I may be wrong, but try selecting F: instead of E: in your INI file as default drive, and see what it does.
If that doesn't work, I'm afraid I can't be of any help |

Maybe it's just me, but im still more than happy gaming with any of the 9X kernels... why oh why would I use an OS that's giving this much trouble with most of the games?
Maybe I 'should' get my hands on Windows XP just to see that most of the emulators ( and some of the 'normal' pc games ) suck on it?
I asked someone I know that obviously has many problems with XP why didn't he switched back to 9X. He said to me : " Because it's stable ". So I said : " is stability worth the price of some games & most emu's not working? is it worth fucking up the OS with all those service packs & patches polluting the registry? is it worth a massive drop in overall performance because of several factors like not being able to defrag the HD completely even with administrator privileges thus loosing space & speed?". So he replied : " well, XP is pretty... ".
Can you tell I don't like it? I *allmost* miss the good old times when DOS never bothered you, at all... _________________ If you translate Pole Position in French with babelfish you get 'Position de Polonais'... I think it's hilarious... from a French point of view. |

"XP is pretty" ROFL
I'm running XP Home, and the only emulator issue I have is Magic Engine's CD sound control. I have no problems with Gens, SNES9x, MAME32, Daphne...even NESticle runs fine, which shocked me; I figured that would be the one to crash & burn.
Mind you, I don't have Service Pack 1 installed, and I'm not using the fancy interface (causes MAME fullscreen issues, and it's just too damn slow). |

The only problem with compatibility I've even experiencedis this issue with Me and the CD rom sound. I have had ZERO problems otherwise.
In fact, I max out on every emulator I have even with all the little features turned on....even Mame and Zsnes.
I bought this new Pc just last week so I'm still getting used to it, but having XP on it from the start has been great.
I dunno whaere you're getting your info about this OS but its pretty freakin awesome for me.
*shruggs*
Now if I could just get this Me problem fixed...
Fooey.

I agree. XP is pretty solid. The Fisher-Price Gummi Bear interface had to go, though.
Cyrus, just so you know, I've had a CD audio problem under XP, 2K Pro, and 98SE, on different hardware, for about two years now. I'm just hoping DM will fix it soon. Although, some others have been luckier than I. I'm still considering the theory that if I had the same model of sound card that DM uses, that I'd not have any more problems, but as of yet haven't been able to find out what he and/or others have. <nudges Kaminari> |

Lemme see what I've got in my dirty case... Mmm, seems like a good old SB Live David must have the same card, if I'm not mistaken.
OK, tonight is the time for that big phat Ennio Morricone live concert that I've been waiting for since last year |

Well guys, by NOT owning the OS I must confess only having second hand info &
opinion about it. BUT if I were to draw a list with all the good & bad points in 2
different columns, XP would surely loose no doubt...
I mean, everybody's talking about the " blue screen of death " of the 9X kernels, but
with the right hardware & the right configuration and/or care I have yet so see this
screen on my new pc, and im using Millennium! *hint* *hint*
Im talking about rock solid here. Not a single " blue screen of death " yet. _________________ If you translate Pole Position in French with babelfish you get 'Position de Polonais'... I think it's hilarious... from a French point of view. |

Hmm... I have millennium on my desktop and 2k pro on my laptop.. the latest beta works fine with 2k and old v 98 hasn't given me any problems on my desktop.
Jabberwok, I have experienced the BSOD in my system some times, but not as many as the &*%$#@! Win 98 gave me. Millennium is pretty good when it comes to running ME. Now if the silly video card stopped making all my other emulators blurry! I want to play Alien VS. Predator on Final Burn without Anti Aliasing... Why, in case the guys at Nvidia ask?
BECAUSE IT DOESN'T NEED IT!!! _________________ Proud owner of a Dreamcast, Saturn, Turbo Duo and a registered version of ME since 2002. |

I dunno. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for in an OS, and what you're going to be doing on that PC. Personally, I'd rather have 2K Pro on this one, but it's shared, and everyone else likes XP. So I'm saving up for my own.

Yeah, it's been my experience that if you apply all the patches to the ME version, it's actually quite stable. I still prefer Win98SE, though; less fluff. |

Mmm-hmm. Thought so.
I'm betting if I get an SB Live! and throw it in this box, that ME sound will work perfectly. If anybody's having CD audio problems and has an SB Live!, speak up. |
