Everyone has his own favorite OS I guess. Being a satisfied Win 9X user, and buying EVERYTHING I use ( besides some of the emulators & roms for obvious reasons ) im waiting for a good reason to drop 450$ canadian in an OS *hint* *hint*
Sure, I could go down the warez route like some individuals... Or buy a brand name box with zero% of the parts I want
Humm, I think ill keep my money & my frankenstein box if you please. I mean, as long as Magic Engine works great, what more should I ask for? a Fisher-Price Gummi Bear interface like AlexisMachine said so elegantly? _________________ If you translate Pole Position in French with babelfish you get 'Position de Polonais'... I have Wi 98 on my old computer and its ok.
I dont have it on the new one though and I dont think I want to try and install it and all of the proper drivers just so I can make ME work on this system.
I dunno...
I have no real opinion about any version of windows. They each have problems and pluses...
The point is, in XP I cant get any CD audio.
I'd just like to have an idea as to what can be done about it.
So far everyone has been really helpful and what was suggested was both logical and sincere.
Why it's not working is beyond me.
I was sure hoping Mr Michel would offer some advice or a hint as to any plans he has to accomodate this problem.
I really didnt want to get into a debate over what version of Windows was better.
I guess thats all.

Yeah, but debating is so much FUN!
Seriously, though...
You say you've got an audio cable, you've turned off digital audio, and you're still not getting sound? I seriously don't know.
However, I *suspect* Magic Engine is having trouble controlling the VIA mixer. I may be wrong, though, since your CD volume in the mixer appears to be set at 98%. I don't have a PC with a VIA chipset on it, so I can't poke around and come up with any solutions.
Maybe DM has a suggestion? |

VIA chipset? maybe... But, since I have a VIA chipset myself ( KT333 ) and not having problems with audio maybe the problem is elsewhere?
Cyrus, is it a brand name or frankenstein box? if it's a brand name, i would find that odd, as I believe that the larger companies usually tweak their boxes so the user don't have any problems at all. _________________ If you translate Pole Position in French with babelfish you get 'Position de Polonais'... Hmm.. can you get audio from the CD rom drive's headphone jack? It was the same with my own cpu some time ago. Also, can you get sound when you play roms on ME? if no sound comes out at all, then it's bigger than we all think.

I can hear the roms' audio just fine. I can even hear sound effects while playing CD games...just not the music.
Stranger still...
I can hear music CDs fine when I play them through mediaplayer or any other Windows program...just not Magic Engine.
It's very strange.

Ok.. what about the CD rom headphone jack? Can you get audio from there? If there's one, of course. _________________ Proud owner of a Dreamcast, Saturn, Turbo Duo and a registered version of ME since 2002. |

If there is a Cd headphone jack I dont know where it is.
I looked over the unit pretty good just now.
I guess there isnt one.
Well, if nothing else I just wanted to thank you for trying to help.
Maybe if D.M. implements that Digital Audio support then this will work.
Who knows if he'll do that though.
Like I said though, thanks for your efforts.

I know.
Implementing Digital Audio support is on my todo list, on top, users are encountering too many problems with the current version, looks like DA is the only solution. _________________ David Michel |

I had the same problem at one point... but here's a little test.
Either your CD or DVD drive should have a front input jack for headphones. Play a game and try to listen to the CD audio that way. Make sure the volume on the drive is turned up to an appropriate level.
If you can hear music, then your analog cable is incorrectly installed.. either you're using the wrong kind of cable, or perhaps you have the plug inserted into the wrong line-in on your soundcard (my soundblaster live! value had 3 different inputs.. only one of which worked).
Disabling digital audio shouldn't be necessary, but you can take that step if you wish.

For the time being, it is necessary since Magic Engine doesn't support digital playback at all. That is: if you let digital playback activated, either you won't have any CD sound or more probably ME will freeze on a black screen at startup. |

God, I really love my franken-box! ^_^ I have the digital audio playback enabled, and the sound will still play through the analog cable for Magic Engine. Guess I'm one in a million... =P
